INDEX

[3288] John Wetherbee came to New England in 1672, settling first at Marlboro. His home was in the south part of the town, now the town of Southborough. He fought in King Phillip's War; and on March 26, 1676, while at church,he was attacked by the Indians who also set fire to his house.

He was one of the founders of the town of Stow. On June 7, 1684 he soldland at Stow to Thomas Ward. On August 22, 1701, he sold to Joseph Doby30 acres with town rights. On September 20, 1706, he bought 50 acres ofupland and 11 acres of meadow from Ruth Wheeler. And on March 4, 1706/7,he sold land to Jacob Brown. He was called "yeoman," and was elected aselectman.

His will was dated October 13, 1707, with a codicil dated April 11,1709.The will was proved April 2, 1711.

[5618] Ephraim Wetherbee was an early settler at Lunenburg. On May 11, 1731, ameeting of the proprietors chose Ephraim Wetherbee a member of acommittee to lay out 800 acres of common lands. He was a captain, a townofficer, and was actively engaged in land speculations. He engaged innumerous transactions with his brother-in-law, Colonel Benjamin Bellows.Bellows' account book describes him as "ensign" in the early entries, later "lieutenant." In 1740 he was involved with Colonel Bellows insurveying the township of Rowley, Canada (now Rockingham, New Hampshire).

He was one of the original settlers of Charlestown under a grant from theProvince of Massachusetts, December 31, 1735. "His house at the time ofthe building of the fort was purchased as one of the Province Houses, asthe houses within the enclosure of the fort were then called. The pricepaid for it was 35. This was in 1743. He was commissioned a Lieutenantunder the Province of Massachusetts, as early as 1737. From the mannerin which his name occurs in the records, he was evidently a person whowas greatly respected. Only two others of the proprietors under theMassachusetts grant settled in No. 4."

Ephraim Wetherbee did not live long at Charlestown. In 1745, heparticipated in the expedition which resulted in the capture of theFortress of Louisbourg, Nova Scotia from the French. He commanded acompany in Colonel Samuel Willard's regiment. The fortress fell on June17, 1745. His death that fall at Boston was probably caused by exposurein the service.
