INDEX

[1432] was a mariner or ferryman, died by drowning.
Described as Weymouth. owned at least one piece of property in Boston and some in Weymouth.

The following is quoted from Sprague's "Genealogies of the Families of Braintree, Mass. 1640-1850."

WILLIAM1 HAYWARD of Braintree seems to be first of record in the Weymouth land grants. A record of landed possessions in Weymouth was made in 1643 similar to the Book of Possessions commenced in Boston in 1645. The possessions of William Hayward are not shown but he is twice there mentioned as abutter to owners of land in Weymouth, Henry Kingman, and James Smith.

On Mar. 19, 1648 William Hayward of Weymouth bought 20 acres of upland in Braintree " being as it were a neck of land, having the river on the east" from John Whitman of Weymouth. (S. D. 2-64) and in 1691 his grandson Jonathan Hayward received a confirmation of the above from the same John Whitman, also some salt marsh adjoining, in each transaction. This homestead remained in the family for generations. It lies on Fore River at the mouth of Pease's or Hayward's Creek just within the present bounds of Braintree where part of the Fore River ship yard now is located. The last occupant of the Hayward name was Miss Annah Hayward who died in Nov. 1936 and whose house stands on the west side of Quincy Ave. south of Hayward's Creek.

William1 Hayward was a boatman or seaman and was drowned May 10, 1659. His wife Margery presented an inventory of his estate (S. P. 3:328), 70 acres, dwelling house, barn, and orchard, and garden, and 5 acres in Weymouth, 2 a. salt marsh, etc., no mention being made of property in Boston, yet on May 25, 1670 widow Margery Hayward sold "all that my piece and parcel of land and dwelling house lying in Boston" (S. D. 7:155).
In 1695 Samuel Hayward and William Hayward, surviving children of William Hayward of Braintree deceased, boatman, or, seaman, brought suit against John Green and Benjamin Fitch of Boston for withholding possession of a house and land on Hudson's or Wing's Lane, near the town dock which was formerly William Hayward's of which he died seized and possessed. This was acknowledged and recorded Dec.5, 1701 (S. D. 20:463) in which Samuel Howard, Josiah Thear of Mendham (Josiah Thayer of Mendon was a grandson) and Jonathan Howard of Braintree quit claim for 12 to the said house and lands. Apparently widow Margery Hayward had sold without the consent of her children and heirs. This land was on present Elm St. on the west side near Dock Square in Boston and may have came to her by inheritance since no record of purchase by her husband is now of record. Her identity has long been sought and claims made that she was Margery Harding or Margery Knight, but without definite proof. This lot in Boston seems to be the one listed in the Book of Possessions as property of Samuel Greames (or Grame) who also had a grant at Braintree, or of Sarah Knight next door to him. It is also worthy of note that Ezekiel Knight owned land at Braintree (Knight's of Quincy Neck) close to the Hayward homestead. Widow Margery Hayward died Jul. 18, 1676, administration on estate given Aug. 1, 1676 to Jonathan, oldest son. The above "house and land of the late William Hayward" in Boston is mentioned as an abutter in S. D. 6-7 in Feb. 22, 1668 (9).

William Hayward of Lime house (London), mariner & Margery Knight were married 10 October 1633 at St. Dumstans, Stepney, London. The time is about right, and the occupation as mariner seem to point to this being the marriage of the Braintree settler, but there is no conclusive evidence to confirm the presumption. The finding of a baptismal record of a daughter Huldah in this parish would confirm it.
William Hayward and Lawrence Copeland witnessed a deed Oct. 13, 1654 (S. D. 2:-87) of James Everill to Simon Lynde.

[1433] Has been called Thayer or Barron,

[1434] may have died young.
Not mentioned in Sprague's "Genealogies of the families of Braintree, Mass. 1640-1850" as a chld of William.

[1439] The following is quoted from Sprague's "Genealogies of the Families of Braintree, Mass. 1640-1850."

"Jonathan Hayward, his cart being laden with wood oversetting pinched his body against a tree whereof after a day or two he dyed, ammo, 89" (Braintree Rec.) (sic).
His will dated Nov. 19, 1689 proved Dec. 26, 1689 (S. D. 2-129, New Series) mentions wife Sarah, oldest son Jonathan executor and gives to son William land that was formerly my brother Samuel's, mentions sons Samuel & Benjamin, daughter Hannah Mills, and daughters Huldah, Deborah, and Sarah, under 18 years. He inherited the homestead of his father as the other children all left town, and bequeathed it to his son Jonathan. "Breakneck Hill" on Liberty St. south of Plain St. is traditionally the site of his fatal accident, but this is very doubtful as it was not near his home and this road was not laid out until 1715.

Will of Jonathan Hayward, Nov. 19, 1689 - Dec. 26, 1689, Eldest son Jonathan sole executor: To son William, land next to highway formerly my brother Samuel's as now fenced & salt marsh at head of Pease's Creek 1 1/2 a. Wife Sarah to be maintained.; To son Samuel & Benjamin 40 each; To eldest dau. Hannah Mills. To daus. Huldah, Deborah & Sarah 20 at marriage or 18; Friends Capt. Samuel White of Weymouth & Nathaniel Wales overseers.

Jan. 27, 1690/1 - Jonathan Hayward administrator of Jonathan his father at request of widow, she declining as certified to court by Nath'l Wales & Joseph Arnold.

Inventory, Dec. 21, 1689 by Samuel White & Nath'l Wales: Land, meadow & orchard 452/10/; Land, meadow given to William 084/10.

[1442] Torrey says DOM 11/28/1666

The following is quoted from Sprague's "Genealogies of the Families of Braintree, Mass. 1640-1850."

Samuel Hayward removed to Mendon early, perhaps with his sister Huldah (Hayward) Thayer in 1663, and his children were born there except during the period of King Philip's War when Mendon was abandoned and the houses burned as was that of Ferdinando and Huldah Thayer, during which period they returned to Braintree where his daughter Sarah was born and children Sarah and Hannah baptized. He still owned a part of Braintree homestead at this time as shown by the record of a highway laid out for "several of the inhabitants that dwell in the eastward part of Monitiquot" Mar. 18, 1677/8, but later sold to his brother Jonathan as mentioned in the latter's will. He took the oath of allegiance at Braintree about 1678.

[1445] Not mentioned in Sprague's "Genealogies of the families of Braintree, Mass. 1640-1850" as a chld of William.
